KAI president Warns of Potential Financial Crisis from High-Speed Rail Project

Bobby Rasyidin highlights concerns over KCIC debt and losses, calling it a “time bomb” for the company.


Jakarta – The President Director of PT Kereta Api indonesia (Persero) or KAI,Bobby Rasyidin,has expressed serious concerns about the financial stability of the company,stating that the debt and losses of PT Kereta Rasa Indonesia-China (KCIC) could pose a significant risk. Rasyidin made these remarks during a meeting with the house of Representatives Commission VI in Jakarta.

KCIC reportedly incurred losses of Rp 1.6 trillion in the first half of 2025. While KAI absorbed losses totaling Rp 1,424 trillion during the same period, this represents a decrease compared to the Rp 2,377 trillion recorded in the first half of the previous year.

Rasyidin stated his intention to thoroughly examine KCIC’s financial burden and pledged to coordinate with relevant parties. “We are sure that in the next week, we can understand all the obstacles, the problems in this KAI. Especially we also investigate the KCIC problem as stated earlier, this is indeed a time bomb,” said Bobby in a hearing with the House of Representatives Commission VI, at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (8/20/2025).

Deputy Chairman of the House of representatives Commission VI, Andre rosiade, urged KAI to collaborate with the Investment Management Agency (BPI) of Daya Anagata Nusantara on solutions for KCIC’s financial challenges, as a resolution has been included in the RKAP 2025. “We want to convey in the 2025 RKAP and Antara,there is already a solution for KCIC completion. Well, I ask Mr. Bobby to coordinate with and between, right every month KAI must be invited by and between for performance evaluation, right?

Rasyidin affirmed his commitment to coordinating with BPI on these issues. “So we will coordinate with and between for the KCIC problem (problem),” he added.

KAI is a member of the project consortium through PT pilar Sinergi BUMN Indonesia (PSBI), where it holds a 58.53% share. PT PSBI controls 60% of the consortium, with the remaining 40% held by Beijing Yawan HSR Co. Ltd.
