A much-anticipated rematch between the United States and Canada is off the table after The Reds suffered elimination from the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The team lost in a 6-5 penalty-kick shootout following a 1-1 draw against Guatemala on Sunday.
Entering the tournament with the third-best odds to win, behind only the U.S. and Mexico, Canada was expected to face the United States in the semifinals. Though, following the unexpected defeat, Canada coach Jesse Marsch attributed the team’s premature exit to missing key players.
Marsch told reporters, “If I’m honest, we’re missing half of our group. That’s not an excuse.”
Prior to the tournament, Marsch had commented on the absence of star players from the U.S. team in the Gold Cup.
“Not one guy called me and said, ‘Coach, I don’t know, its been a long year, maybe I don’t come to the Gold Cup.’ Not one guy,” Marsch stated earlier in June. “Not even close to that conversation.”
The most significant absence for Canada is Alphonso Davies, widely regarded as one of the best left backs globally. Davies suffered a torn right ACL in March during the concacaf Nations League.
Canada is set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the united States and Mexico next summer.
