Italy‘s baseball team recently concluded a high-level World Cup, with a team made up of numerous Italian-American players. These athletes carry with them their grandparents’ stories and enjoy joking about clichés while celebrating victories over coffee. The team stands out for its passion and pleasure in sharing moments of celebration together.
First, let’s clarify. The rules of the World Baseball Classic – which is an invitational tournament – allow anyone who is even eligible to obtain Italian citizenship to be called up. Thus, in the 30 players on the roster, there are three Italians: Claudio Scotti (who took the last minute place of another Italian, Alessandro Ercolani), Gabriele Quattrini and Samuel Aldegheri, the first pitcher “trained in Italy” to debut in MLB, the American professional league (there should also have been the catcher Alberto Mineo, champion in Nicaragua, also knocked out by an injury).
