The film centers on Tom, a tennis instructor on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. While tourists flock to the island for idyllic vacations, Tom’s reality is far from paradise. His days are marked by routine, fleeting encounters, and a reliance on alcohol to numb the ennui of his existence.

Director Jan-Ole Gerster’s inspiration stemmed from an encounter a decade prior. He recalls being struck by the repetitive nature of a tennis instructor’s life in a similar setting. If you hear it for two weeks, it gets a different quality and develops like a sound installation that also told about the monotony of his life. This observation, coupled with the stark beauty of Fuerteventura’s landscape, served as the genesis for “Islands.”

Fuerteventura, with its volcanic rock formations, expansive sand dunes, and pristine beaches, offers a visually stunning contrast to Tom’s internal struggles. he remains largely oblivious to the island’s allure,trapped in a cycle of superficial connections and escapism.

A Disappearance and Rising Suspicions

The arrival of Anne, her husband Dave, and their young son disrupts Tom’s routine. Hired as the son’s tennis coach, Tom quickly becomes entangled in their lives. He leverages his connections to secure the family a better hotel room, refusing payment for his assistance.In return, Anne offers him an invitation:

following an evening out with Tom and Dave, Dave vanishes without a trace. As Tom accompanies anne to the police station, he notices inconsistencies in her story, leading him to suspect foul play. Sam Riley delivers a compelling performance as Tom,a man reluctantly drawn into a web of deceit.

“Islands” is a modern take on classic film noir, featuring a captivating femme fatale, a seemingly oblivious husband, and a reluctant protagonist thrust into the role of detective. The film’s sound design, especially the constant presence of wind, presented a significant challenge during production. Jan-Ole Gerster recalls, There has always been something going on and whenever we thought, WOW, what a great motif our Tonmann Stefan beat the hands over his head. But he always found solutions that made it possible for us to use the original sound at the end!
