No one wins a war; just loses humanity.
This poignant statement by Pope Francis, delivered during his Angelus prayer on October 8, 2023, resonates deeply as armed conflicts continue to plague our world. His consistent message serves as a stark reminder that war is not a solution, but rather a prolonged assault on human dignity.
As Ukraine bravely resists the ongoing Russian invasion, now entering it’s third year, and as the cycle of violence between Israel and Palestine reignites following a fleeting truce, the imperative to forge peace cannot be further delayed. The human cost is simply too high.
Ukraine: A Stalled war wiht Relentless Casualties
The seeds of the ukrainian conflict were sown in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea. However, the full-scale invasion launched by Moscow on February 24, 2022, marked a devastating escalation, triggering a war of occupation and fierce resistance. According to estimates from the War Studies Institute (ISW) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 10 million Ukrainians have been displaced, and casualties are believed to exceed 500,000.
In a report by The Washington Post on March 10, 2025, president Volodymyr Zelensky made a discreet visit to the United States, seeking renewed military support from Congress. He warned, If Ukraine falls, the war will not end at our borders.
His plea included requests for long-range artillery and enhanced anti-aircraft defenses to counter Russia’s intensified offensives in Kharkiv and Donbas.
However, political gridlock in the U.S. over military spending has stalled the approval of crucial aid packages. Meanwhile, Ukrainian civilians in cities like Avdiivka continue to suffer under relentless Russian bombardment. UNICEF reports that at least 180 schools were destroyed or damaged in March alone, severely impacting the education of countless children.
Israel and Palestine: Shattered Truces,Enduring Wounds
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, spanning over seven decades, witnessed another surge in violence following the October 7,2023,Hamas attack from Gaza, which resulted in over 1,200 israeli deaths. Israel’s subsequent military offensive has devastated gaza, exacerbating an already dire situation.
As of April 1, 2025, data from the Gaza Ministry of Health indicates that over 34,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, including at least 14,000 children. UN agencies have declared this a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale.
Following a brief truce in early March, hostilities resumed with increased intensity. On March 27, the Humanitarian Affairs coordination Office (OCHA) reported that over 70% of Gaza is now uninhabitable, and the scarcity of water, food, and medical supplies threatens the lives of over 2 million civilians trapped with no means of escape.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated on April 2, What happens in Gaza cannot be justified as legitimate defense. It is an inadmissible human tragedy.
Despite this, major powers remain divided, with no viable resolution plan in sight.
The Pain of the Innocent: The True Victims of Conflict
Consider fatima, a 12-year-old girl from Gaza who lost her mother and younger brother in a bombing. She now lives in a displacement camp, lacking access to essential medicines and education. Or ilya, a 17-year-old from Mariupol, Ukraine, who was recruited into the army before finishing high school. These are just two faces representing a global tragedy, where children bear the brunt of political and military decisions made by adults far removed from the battlefield.
In his 2023 Message for World Peace Day, Pope Francis powerfully stated:
Every war is a defeat. The only possible victory is peace built from justice, forgiveness, and truth.
Pope Francis,Message for World Peace Day 2023
Since 2014,Pope Francis has consistently condemned escalating conflicts with unwavering moral clarity. In January 2024, he asserted:
Those who cause wars do it by ambition and power. They are not leaders: they are death merchants.
Pope Francis, January 2024
Is There a way Out? Diplomacy as the Only Viable Path
while billions of dollars are poured into arms, investment in dialog and reconstruction remains woefully inadequate. in both Ukraine and Gaza, diplomatic efforts are stalled due to geopolitical interests, regional rivalries, and a lack of political will.
Javier Solana, former NATO Secretary-General,recently cautioned in El País:
If the world does not take the multilateral peace processes seriously,we will end up normalizing the unacceptable: permanent wars as part of the order.
Javier Solana, former NATO Secretary-General
The continuation of these conflicts is not an unavoidable accident. It is the direct result of political choices, diplomatic failures, and international self-interest. As Pope Francis eloquently put it, Peace is a craft. It is not improvised; it is built day by day.
Faced with the devastation in Kyiv and the rubble of Gaza, humanity must make a critical choice: continue to fuel the war machine or embrace a radical shift towards reconciliation. It is imperative that we listen to the voices of those who suffer, dismantle hateful rhetoric, and reaffirm the inherent value of every human life.
