MANILA, Philippines – The House legislative franchises committee will convene on Wednesday, February 5, for the first time in two years to discuss the status of the controversial media group ABS-CBN.

According to the House website, the briefings will center on the “ABS-CBN application in light of the Philippine Competition Commission’s report on the alleged high market concentration in the broadcast industry.”

Efforts to Revive ABS-CBN’s Presence

In January, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Joey Salceda introduced a bill aimed at granting ABS-CBN a new franchise. This marks a significant shift, coming nearly five years after the Duterte administration denied the network’s previous bid to renew its license.

Salceda’s initiative follows a two-year period of inaction, during which the newly inaugurated Ferdinand Marcos Jr. administration saw several lawmakers proposing measures to bring ABS-CBN back to free television.

Following the shutdown of ABS-CBN’s broadcast business in May 2020, the company redefined its role in the media landscape. It pivoted into a content provider for various entities, including its former competitors GMA Network and TV5. Popular ABS-CBN shows are now available on free television through content partnerships.

ABS-CBN also continued its cable business and expanded its online content offerings, including licensing content to streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney Plus.
