Mother’s Plea: The Importance of Childhood Vaccinations in Protecting Immunocompromised Children

Jen Fisher, a mother from Franklin, Tennessee, understands the delicate balance of protecting her 12-year-old son Raleigh, who has a congenital heart condition. While Raleigh has received all recommended vaccinations, his weakened immune system makes him more vulnerable to illnesses that could be life-threatening.

“We want everyone to be vaccinated so that diseases like measles, which have basically been eradicated, don’t come back,” Fisher emphasizes. “Those can certainly have a very adverse effect on Raleigh.” Her plea underscores the critical role vaccines play in community health and individual protection.

Irony of High Vaccination Rates in Conservative States

Despite Tennessee being a conservative state with poor health outcomes and one of the shortest life expectancies in the nation, Fisher could previously take comfort in the state’s high childhood vaccination rates. This anomaly exists alongside similarly conservative and less healthy states like Mississippi and West Virginia, which boast high kindergarten vaccination rates.

“The kinds of policies that states have don’t map neatly on to ‘red’ versus ‘blue’ or one region or another,” explains James Colgrove, a Columbia University professor.

Rising Vaccine Exemptions Across the Country

However, this positive trend is now under threat. Reports indicate that the percentage of kindergartners exempt from one or more vaccinations has reached 3.3% in the 2023-24 school year, with a significant increase in 40 states and Washington, D.C. Tennessee and Mississippi, among others, saw notable rises too. The alarming trend can largely be attributed to a growing “health freedom” movement driven by anti-vaccine messaging.

The Persuasive Power of Messaging

Advocates, doctors, and public health officials express concern over the declining immunization levels and the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases. Pediatricians in states like Florida and Georgia are particularly worried, citing religious exemptions that make it easier for unvaccinated children to attend school. In Florida, these exemptions can reach as high as 50% in some areas.

“The religious exemption is huge,” Dr. Brandon Chatani from Orlando notes. “It has allowed for an easy way for these kids to enter schools without vaccines.”

State Policies and Their Impact

The ease of obtaining exemptions varies widely across states. California, Connecticut, Maine, and New York have removed religious and philosophical exemptions, while West Virginia has not. Idaho, Alaska, and Utah lead in exemption rates, allowing parents to secure religious exemptions with minimal effort.

Georgia and Florida, known for their low vaccination rates, allow parents to exempt their children without seeking medical sign-off. This leniency has led to significant drops in MMR coverage. Georgia saw a decrease from 93.1% to 88.4%, with Florida slipping from 93.5% to 88.1% during the 2023-24 school year.

The Repercussions of Declining Rates

These declines pose serious health risks. In December, Georgia reported a significant increase in whooping cough cases, reaching 280 in 2024 compared to 96 the previous year. Such outbreaks highlight the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates.

“There’s lots of data to support the fact that when personal belief exemptions are not permitted, vaccination rates are higher,” states Dr. Andi Shane from Atlanta.

The Mississippi Case Study

Until 2023, Mississippi was celebrated for its stringent vaccination policies, allowing exemptions only for medical reasons with a doctor’s approval. However, a federal judge’s ruling in April 2023 mandated religious exemptions, prompting a surge in vaccine hesitancy among families.

“We are seeing more and more skepticism, more and more vaccine hesitancy, and a lack of confidence because of this ruling,” comments pediatrician Dr. Anita Henderson.

Future Trends and Policy Changes

In West Virginia, where exemptions have historically been prohibited, a new administration may soon alter this policy. Governor Pat Morrisey, who criticized vaccine mandates during his inaugural address, has proposed provisions to allow religious and conscientious exemptions.

“I want to send a message that if you have a religious belief, then we’re going to have an exception,” Morrisey stated at a press conference.

The Long-term Implications

The potential changes raise concerns about public health. Dr. Matthew Christiansen, West Virginia’s former health officer, worries that broadened exemptions could compromise the health of communities, especially vulnerable populations.

“Kids getting measles and mumps and polio and being paralyzed for their whole life is an impediment on personal freedom and autonomy for those kids,” Christiansen argues.

The Role of Informed Consent

The anti-vaccine movement has gained momentum, amplified by growing sentiment since the pandemic. In Tennessee, Stand for Health Freedom has called for the resignation of the state’s medical director, accusing her of disregarding “informed consent rights.”

Epidemic diseases of the past have been largely eradicated thanks to widespread vaccination programs. However, the fading memory of such outbreaks poses a risk of resurgence. “It may unfortunately take a resurgence of those diseases to raise awareness of how dangerous, deadly, and preventable they are,” Dr. Henderson concludes.
