By Archnetys News Team | published: 2025-04-03

The quest for Authenticity: Finding the Right Voice

In a bold move to maintain the integrity and impact of a disturbing narrative, a recent podcast production sought a voice that could deliver chilling messages without sensationalism. The goal was to find someone who could embody the persona of “Pål” – a figure whose words, drawn from the depths of the Freak forum, needed to be presented with stark neutrality.

sjur Vatne Brean: The Embodiment of Neutrality

The production team ultimately selected Sjur Vatne Brean, renowned for his work in the popular NRK series Rådebank, to voice “Pål”‘s messages. This choice was deliberate, aiming for a voice devoid of pre-existing connotations or emotional coloring.

What we wanted was to have a voice that was not so colored – almost completely neutral voice.

This approach contrasts sharply with typical true crime narratives, which frequently enough rely on dramatic narration to heighten the sense of suspense and horror. By opting for neutrality, the podcast aims to allow the content of “Pål”‘s messages to speak for themselves, forcing listeners to confront the disturbing reality without the filter of emotional manipulation.

Directing the Tone: Everyday Snapshots, Not Hamlet

The direction given to Brean emphasized the importance of portraying the messages as mundane, almost routine reports. The aim was to capture the chilling normalcy with which such dark thoughts can be expressed.

My direction to Sjur was to try to make it as everyday as possible – what “Pål” wrote was just a small short report. There was no drama in the posts. There are small snapshots, not Hamlet.

This approach underscores a critical aspect of understanding online radicalization and the spread of extremist ideologies. Often, the most risky ideas are disseminated not through grand pronouncements, but through seemingly innocuous exchanges and casual observations.

The Meaning of Age and Perspective

Another crucial factor in the selection of Brean was his age, aligning closely with that of “Pål.” This was intended to further minimize any artificiality or embellishment in the delivery, ensuring that the messages resonated with an unsettling authenticity.

We also wanted a person who was the same age as “Pål” was, who could read without adding too much emotion or overplaying. When we had done a test with Sjur we thought it worked very well.

By choosing a voice that mirrors the age and potentially the mindset of the individual behind the messages, the podcast seeks to create a more profound and unsettling connection with its audience. This approach forces listeners to confront the uncomfortable possibility that such thoughts and expressions can originate from individuals within their own communities.

The Broader context: Online Extremism and the Power of Words

The podcast’s approach to presenting “Pål”‘s messages highlights the growing concern surrounding online extremism and the power of words to incite violence and hatred. According to recent studies, online hate speech has seen a significant increase in recent years, with platforms struggling to effectively moderate and combat the spread of harmful content. This podcast serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of online radicalization and the importance of understanding the language and motivations of those who promote extremist ideologies.
