County Councillors Approve €2 Million for Bundoran Waterworld Refurbishment

County Councillors in south Donegal have embraced a much-needed financial injection for the essential refurbishment of Bundoran Waterworld. The council has sanctioned almost €2 million to ensure the water complex’s operations can continue smoothly, particularly ahead of the busy 2025 summer season.

Key Funding Details

The council has approved a contribution of €1,991,623 through the reallocation of a capital loan. This investment will be complemented by an anticipated €350,000 in SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) grants, providing the total €2 million to kickstart the refurbishment works.

Works to Be Undertaken

The planned upgrade includes several critical components. The changing facilities will be expanded and modernized to accommodate more visitors. The air handling unit, a key aspect of maintaining water and air quality, will be replaced. Additionally, the design and planning necessary to execute these changes will receive the necessary funding.

Significance to the Local Community

Operating since 1989, Bundoran Waterworld is more than just a swimming complex. It employs three full-time staff year-round and supports 42 seasonal positions from Easter through August. Its significance extends beyond employment; Waterworld is a cornerstone attraction for tourists visiting Bundoran.

Positive Impact on Tourism

Businesses in Bundoran and the surrounding areas view Waterworld as a pivotal piece of tourism infrastructure. The facility attracts both day visitors and extended stay tourists, playing a crucial role in the local economy. Councillor Michael McMahon expressed his enthusiasm about the refurbishment, praising Director of Services Garry Martin for his long-standing oversight of the facility. Councillor Michael Naughton further emphasized the vital role Waterworld plays in tourism, stating, “Waterworld is a huge tourism attraction for Bundoran and is a great asset to the area.”

The continued investment in Cutting-edge recreational facilities is a testament to the commitment of County Councillors to fostering a vibrant and welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.
