By Google standards, Messenger has Google Messages already has a long history behind it, can look back on a checkered past and is now being modernized with new functions. In the last few days there have been a number of innovations that have either been shown in teardowns or have been officially announced. Here you can find an overview of all planned changes.

After Google repeatedly torpedoed the messenger market with new products over many years and then made them disappear again just as quickly, they are on board Google Messages finally brought peace. They seem to want to stick to this approach in the future and modernize the messenger. This is also urgently needed because Google has one growing messenger problem and one problematic messenger past.
Share live location
The first important innovation for the messenger has already been officially announced and rolled out for many users. Through a deep integration of the Google Find Hub, which is also still waiting for its best days, users can now share their live location for a certain period of time or permanently without having to leave Messenger.

Message editing history
An upcoming innovation will allow users to track the processing of messages. In recent months, users have been alerted to edited messages but have been unable to restore the original. This is changing with a new function that was already available at the beginning of this editing option. The history can be found in the information about the message.

Recycle bin for recovery
In Google Messages, conversations that are no longer needed can be deleted so that they no longer appear in the list. Previously, these disappeared after deletion and could not be restored, which may have become problematic in some cases. Anyone who notices that a conversation may have contained important messages can now undo it. Thanks to a trash can, all deleted conversations are still available for 30 days and can be restored from this location at any time.

Login only with a Google account
Google not only gives new features, but also takes away old ones. Logging into the web version via QR code scan with your smartphone will soon be a thing of the past. If you use this function, you will be informed that this will soon no longer be possible. Of course, you can still use the web version because it is now connected to your Google account and can therefore be used permanently without a separate login thanks to synchronization.

There will probably be further modernizations, but these may take a while to come. The forced connection to the Google account and an expected integration of Gemini should further modernize the messenger and perhaps make it more relevant.
