Google Maps Corrects Directions to Certaldo Alto Following Community Advocacy

Certaldo, Italy – After years of citizen complaints and persistent advocacy, Google Maps has finally updated its directions to Certaldo Alto, a historic hilltop town in Tuscany. The correction comes after concerted efforts by the “Terra di Valdelsa” association, addressing a long-standing issue that misdirected tourists and negatively impacted local businesses.
The “Terra di Valdelsa” association spearheaded the effort, directly contacting Google to rectify the inaccurate routes. The updated directions now accurately guide visitors to the upper part of Certaldo, ensuring they are directed to the funicular, a crucial link to the historic center. This is a meaningful victory, as it not only streamlines access for tourists but also boosts visibility for businesses along the correct route.
Previously, Google Maps diverted travelers from Piazza Masini (near the railway station) onto Via XX Settembre, bypassing Via 2 June, the town’s main thoroughfare leading to piazza Boccaccio and the funicular. The updated route now prioritizes Via 2 June, ensuring visitors experience the heart of Certaldo and that local businesses benefit from increased foot traffic.
The previous deviation not only lengthened the journey for unsuspecting visitors but also deprived them of the possibility to explore the main street, which offers a more direct and well-equipped path to Certaldo Alto. The association also successfully lobbied for the inclusion of “Certaldo Alto” as a search term that directs users to the parking area located behind the town walls.
We are very happy to see that our commitment has led to a concrete change. The funicular is the most comfortable and ecological means to reach the historic center and now, thanks to this update, more people will be able to enhance its usefulness and use it more ease.
