George R.R. Martin on "The Winds of Winter," Retirement, and the Expansive ‘Game of Thrones’ Universe

George R.R. Martin, the brilliant mind behind the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire (the source material for the hit HBO show Game of Thrones), has recently spoken about the highly-anticipated The Winds of Winter, his writing process, and the future of the Game of Thrones universe beyond Westeros.

The Winds of Winter: Still a Priority, But No Guarantees

Martin’s fans have been eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in A Song of Ice and Fire, for over a decade. During a recent interview, he acknowledged the significant delay, stating, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time."

While he reassured fans that the book is still a priority, there’s no definitive timeline for its completion. He acknowledges the uncertainty, saying, "A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!"

Beyond Westeros: A Multifaceted Fantasy Future

Despite the writing challenges surrounding The Winds of Winter, Martin remains active in the Game of Thrones universe. His prequel series, House of the Dragon, has been a massive success for HBO Max. He is also working on another prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on his Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, slated for release in 2025.

Additionally, several other spin-off series, including Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Snake/Nine Voyages, and 10,000 Ships, are in early development, promising a rich and expanding world for fans to explore.

Retirement is Not in the Cards

Martin, known for his prolific writing and passionate storytelling, assures fans he has no plans to retire anytime soon. He even quipped, "I’m not a golfer." With such a vast and engaging universe to continue exploring, it seems the world of Game of Thrones is far from over.
