Artist El Anatsui designs the iron curtain of the Vienna State Opera
The artist from Ghana, awarded a golden Biennale lion in 2015, was hired for the season 2025/’26. Its raw materials are often old screw caps, packaging materials or labels. In the hand of El Anatsui, enormous curtains, wall objects or room installations become an extraordinary sophistication. Traditional textile art is just as much in it as the allusion to imported western consumer culture, for which Africa becomes too often becoming a garbage dump – but at El Anatsui the continent is never in the victim role, but occurs confidently. Now the Ghanaian is designing the new iron curtain in the Vienna State Opera. The 81-year-old finished installations, sculptures and wall work, which is “characterized by special material aesthetics and a profound examination of history, memory and global interdependencies,” it said in a broadcast.

Bregenz
The subsidies for the Bregenz Festival for the years 2025 and 2026 are shortened by 30 percent.
For the festival, this means a minus of 2.1 million euros per year, said Festival President Hans-Peter Metzler and the Mayor of Bregenz Michael Ritsch (SPÖ) after the board of trustees on Tuesday. The festival can intercept some of them through reserves, the program for 2025 remains unaffected. A cooperation with the Burgtheater is postponed. The subsidiary BUND (bears 40 percent of the subsidy), land (35 percent) and city (25 percent) shorten their previous contribution of a total of 6.9 million euros each.

On the seaside stage, Carl Maria von Weber’s romantic opera “Der Freischütz” (1821) is on the program again this year. The premiere is on July 17th. But the joy is clouded, because the Bregenz Festival is deliberately painted together: for the years 2025 and 2026 they will get 30 percent less – this means a minus of 2.1 million euros per year. At the Opus Classic, a crised industry tries to tear healthy classical music into the abyss. One of my favorite quotes by Karl Valentin is: “The ignorator ma net amoi!”. Why, damn it triggers me every time the winners of the Opus Klassik be announced? Ultimately, this price is a bit like a traffic accident in the music industry: you don’t want to look – but somehow you can’t leave it. You drive a little slower, shake your head frightened and then drive more carefully through your own daily business. After all: Jonas Kaufmann and Lang Lang this time (so far) go away empty -handed! What really irritates me and makes me almost pitying is how helpless and arbitrarily the “jury” distributes its prices. No one understands internationally. England’s music critic Norman rightly writes: “The Opus classic is just diffuse, and it is difficult to say who is awarded there.”

The mezzo -soprano Ksenia Dudnikova, born in Andijan (Uzbekistan), initially studied conducting at the State University in Krasnodar (Russia) and then singing at the state conservatory in Moscow. After an engagement at the Stanislawski and Nemirowitsch-Dantschenko-Musiktheater in Moscow, she moved to the ensemble of the Bolschoi Theater in 2021, where she had already debuted as a Maddalena (Rigoletto) in 2016. Her repertoire also includes games such as Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Princess of Boullion (Adriana Lecouvreur), Marguerite (La Damnation de Faust), Pauline (Pique Dame), Amneris (Aida), Olga (Eugen Onegin), Princess Eboli (Don Carlo) and the title parts in Carmen and the Jungfrau From Orléans. The work of the ABBA composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus as well as Tim Rice scores with unforgettable hits such as “One Night in Bangkok” and “I Know Him So Well”, but also a breathtaking act of politics, conspiracy, love and jealousy against the background of a chess championship at the time of the Cold War
Andreas Gergenthe designated artistic director of the Baden stage, deliberately stages Chess as a timeless political thriller. The list of soloists reads like the WHO-IS-WHO of the musical scene: Drew Sarich and Mark Seibert as an American and Russian grand master of the chess compete against each other Femke Soetenga stands as a lover and assistant between the two. As the head of the American delegation Boris Pfeifer to see his Russian counterpart is from Georgij Makazaria embodied.
