Like every month, new measures come into force this Sunday, February 1, with good and not so good news.
Some good and some (very) not so good. After numerous changes in January, new developments are announced for February 2026. The price of electricity subscriptions will notably decrease, as will the price of kWh of gas. Bank rates, like toll rates, will increase. We take stock.
Savings rates are changing
Table of Contents
As announced at the beginning of January, the rates of the main savings products will be revised downwards. The yield on the Livret A and the LDDS will increase from 1.7% to 1.5%, while that of the Popular Savings Booklet (LEP), reserved for low-income households, will fall from 2.7% to 2.5%.
The Ministry of the Economy followed the recommendations of the Banque de France. According to Roland Lescure, this drop remains consistent with the economic situation: the rate remains “higher than inflation” (0.8% over one year in December 2025 according to INSEE) and makes it possible to “preserve the purchasing power of households”.
A slight drop in the electricity subscription price
From February 1, the price of the electric subscription will fall. The transmission tariff contribution rate will drop from 21.93% to 15%, representing a saving of around €10 per year for a typical household, indicates the government. “For a baker who consumes a lot, this can represent up to €200 per year,” said the Minister of the Economy.
A slight reduction in regulated prices could also occur if it is validated by the government. The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has proposed a reduction of 0.83% in the tariffs applied to households and small professionals.
The price of gas continues to fall
For the seventh consecutive month, the benchmark selling price of natural gas has fallen. In February, the kilowatt hour intended for heating will increase from €0.10192 to €0.09983 (-2%). For cooking and hot water use, it will drop from €0.13249 to €0.11304 (-1.5%).
Bank fees on the rise
On the bad news side, bank rates will increase by an average of 3% from February 1, according to the consumer association CLCV. This increase, equivalent to that of last year and well above inflation, is explained by the increase in account maintenance and bank card fees. Cash withdrawals from other banks’ ATMs will also be more expensive.
Slight increase in toll prices
Motorists will also see a slight increase, but moderate: motorway prices will increase “only” by 0.86% on February 1, 2026. A moderate increase which contrasts with previous years: +4.75% in 2023, +3% in 2024 and +0.92% in 2025. A welcome breather for the wallets of regular drivers.
New rules for refunding plane tickets
From February 7, the procedure for refunding plane tickets is changing. In the event of denied boarding, cancellation or significant delay, travelers must first contact a Tourism and Travel mediator before taking any legal action. It is only after this step that they will be able to initiate proceedings by summons, using a lawyer or a bailiff.
