The 33rd International Book Fair in Cuba has drawn to a close in Santiago de Cuba, marking another successful year for the cultural event.The fair, a nationwide festivity of literature, recognized the contributions of numerous individuals and organizations that made the event possible.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrera, president of the Cuban Institute of the Book (ICL), highlighted the meaningful international participation, noting the presence of over 400 foreign representatives, including the Republic of South Africa. Cabrera emphasized that this level of engagement reflects the security and trust that Cuba inspires and its commitment to artistic and literary diversity.

Key Figures Honored and Future Plans Unveiled

During the closing ceremony, several key figures were recognized for thier contributions to literature and culture. Francisca López Civeira received the key to the city of Santiago de Cuba, while Virgilio López Lemus, to whom this year’s fair was dedicated, was honored as a distinguished visitor by the Municipal Assembly of Popular Power. Ediciones Santiago, the provincial government’s publishing arm, was also recognized for its efforts.

Looking ahead, organizers announced that the 34th edition of the fair will be dedicated to the centenary of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, celebrating his enduring legacy and influence.

Notable Sales and Readership Figures

This year’s fair showcased over 1,300 new editorial releases, with approximately 2,400,000 physical books marketed.The Cuban government subsidized the sale of 510,000 copies, making literature more accessible to the public. Additionally,over 3,000 books were available in digital format,catering to a growing audience of e-readers. Estimated attendance reached 900,000 people, demonstrating the fair’s widespread appeal.

The ICL president also lauded the Territorial Editorial Seals System, wich, over the past 25 years, has provided the reading public with five million copies.
