The president of the European Parliament spoke of this second occasion after the co -founder’s greeting: “I am honored to welcome President Metsola in a place that represents a concrete example of hope and rebirth – said Letizia Moratti – and which in these decades has successfully helped more than 26 thousand young people to overcome the challenge with addiction. Its presence is a strong sign of the attention that Europe intends to reserve to those who work every day to offer a second possibility ». Not only a ceremonial moment: during the visit there was also talk of European social policies, the prevention of addictions, the support for youth fragility, the models of social economy and the contribution of the third sector to strengthening the national health system. Letizia Moratti insisted on the need for the EU to finish with specific research calls through Horizon Europe, “as long as they evaluate the effectiveness of the recovery paths, the prevention models and the social impact of addictions in the territories, as is done in this reality”. In addition, he urged a European plan on Fenanyl, as the Italian government has already done, in order to counter synthetic opioids, a threat that only the union can face effectively. The former minister also stressed that “Europe is not only an institutional project, but a community of values. And the values ​​that we celebrate here together with the guests of San Patrignano are those of solidarity, human dignity and collective responsibility ».

And the President of the European Parliament, for his part, spoke of the visit as a “tangible sign” of attention of the institutions towards those who have been spent for the most fragile for almost fifty years: Europe – he said – puts the person at the center of his policies. To work better in this direction, he specified, “the European Parliament wants a more incisive role in the EU in health policy, in order to share experiences and ensure that no one is left behind. On these hills, recovery and professional training programs follow and 72% of them do not fall in addiction. For twenty years with the Wefree program some of them sensitize young people to schools: so far they have already met sixty thousand students. A “tangible sign”, as Metsola recognized, of the type of welfare that Europe has and wants to continue to have.
