UA total of 17 parties and coalitions compete for the June 9 European Parliament elections, the same number as in 2019, but, after all, how much does an MEP earn? O net salary can exceed seven thousand euros.

“The monthly salary of a Member of the European Parliament is 10,075.18 euros gross and 7,853.89 euros net, after deducting EU taxes and insurance contributions (values ​​from 1 July 2023). The funds come from the Parliament’s budget”, can be read on the European Parliament’s website.

It is worth mentioning that, “taking into account that Member States may apply additional national taxes, the final net amounts depend on the tax regime of the Member’s country of origin“.

What about pensions?

Also according to the European Parliament, “when they turn 63, former deputies are entitled to a retirement pensionin accordance with Article 14 of the Statute for Members of the European Parliament”.

“The amount of this pension amounts, for each full year of office, to 3.5% of the amount of his salary and, for each additional full month, to one twelfth, but cannot exceed 70% in total. costs are borne by the EU budget”, it reads.

It should be noted that the “complementary pension scheme, which was introduced in 1989 for the benefit of Members of the European Parliament, ceased to cover new Members in July 2009 and is being progressively abolished”.

Almost 11 million Portuguese people can vote for the European Parliament

An estimated number of 10.9 million Portuguese votersof which more than 641 thousand newcomers, are called to participate in the European Championships which in the country are scheduled for June 9th, Eurostat announced.
