Emma Raducanu Seeks to Turn Her Form Around at Qatar WTA 1000
Emma Raducanu is facing challenges in recent weeks following her promising performance at the Australian Open.
The British WTA star began the year with back-to-back victories in Melbourne, setting herself up for a strong 2025 campaign. However, things took a turn as she encountered a tough defeat.
Raducanu lost to Iga Swiatek, 1-6, 0-6, in the Australian Open third round, following victories over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Amanda Anisimova.
Next, Raducanu competed in Singapore, facing Spain’s Cristina Bucsa. Despite her strong start in the first set, she ultimately fell, 7-5, 5-7, 5-7.
Undeterred, the 2021 US Open champion traveled to the Middle East for the Abu Dhabi Open, where she received a main draw wildcard. Her hopes for a comeback, however, were short-lived, as Raducanu lost to Marketa Vondrousova, 3-6, 4-6.
Two early exits brought doubt to Raducanu’s 2025 predictions, but her next opportunity to redeem herself is on the horizon.
Emma Raducanu Handed Main Draw Wildcard for Qatar WTA 1000
Recently, it was announced on Twitter that Raducanu had accepted a wildcard into the Qatar WTA 1000. At rank 56th in the world, she did not qualify directly for the event.
Raducanu’s last appearance in Qatar ended in a loss to Ukrainian player Anhelina Kalinina, 0-6, 6-7, in the first round. This time around, she is eager to overturn her poor performance.

Her participation in Qatar’s main draw is seen as a significant opportunity for the young British talent to regain her confidence.

Karolina Muchova Withdraws Due to Injury
One notable absence from the Qatar Open is Karolina Muchova, who withdrew due to a leg injury. Muchova recently played at the Linz Open, where she lost in the semifinals to Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Muchova’s last season included a loss to Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open’s second round. Despite her recent setbacks, she has been a consistent performer in the past.
- 2024 US Open – Lost in SF to Jessica Pegula
- 2024 China Open – Lost in F to Coco Gauff
- 2024 Ningbo Open – Lost in SF to Mirra Andreeva
Tennis commentator Andy Roddick had Muchova on his list of potential Grand Slam winners for 2025, praising her ability to compete against the world’s best.
“The only thing separating her from the top five is health and she can bother everyone,” Roddick commented. “She would be on my top five list of people who could win a Slam next year, she could win a Major.”
Unfortunately, injuries have hampered Muchova’s early 2025 season. Despite these setbacks, she is expected to make a return at the Dubai WTA 1000 event in February.
