The determination of Zulhijah and Eid al-Adha is based on the results of hisab and rukyat (Hilal Monitoring), taking into account the MABIMS criteria (religious Ministers of brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore).
The Ministry of Religion conducts new moon observations at 114 strategic locations throughout Indonesia, involving teams from the Ministry, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and various Islamic organizations. This collaborative effort ensures the accuracy and reliability of the hilal observations.
Earlier, members of the Rukyat Team from the Indonesian Ministry of Religion presented their calculations regarding the position of Hilal Zulhijah 1446 H/2025 AD, confirming that the moon’s position aligns with the Mabims criteria.
“Some areas of Aceh province meets the criteria for Mabims early in Kamariah so that the 1st of Zulhijah 1446 H fell on Wednesday Kliwon,May 28,2025,” explained Cecep Nurwendaya during a Hilal position seminar.
According to Cecep’s statement, on the day of rukyat (May 27, 2025), the height of the new moon across the indonesian archipelago ranged from 0 degrees 44 ’09 “(0.74 degrees) to 3 degrees 12′ 17” (3.20 degrees), with elongations between 5 degrees 50 ’38 “(5.84 degrees) to 7 degrees 06′ 16” (7.10 degrees).
Several locations in Aceh Province, including Sabang, TGK Chiek Kuta Karang Lhoknga Observatory, Banda Aceh, and Lhokseumawe, met the Hilal Mabims visibility criteria.
“Only Banda Aceh is the provincial capital, then in Banda Aceh is also not all. There are 14 out of 23 regencies of the City of Aceh Province that meet the high criteria for 3 degrees with an elongation of 6.4 degrees,” Cecep added.
As Indonesia adheres to Wilayatul Hukmi, the sighting of the new moon in one region is sufficient to declare the start of 1 Zulhijah 1446 H, which coincides with Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
“Indonesia adheres to Wilayatul Hukmi because there are already parts in Indonesia that have entered, reckoning it has entered the date. So tomorrow (May 28, 2025) has entered the 1st of Zulhijah 1446 H,” Cecep clarified.
The MABIMS criteria stipulate a hilal height of 3 degrees with an elongation angle of 6.4 degrees. Consequently, 1 Zulhijah falls on May 28, 2025.
The Isbat Session plays a crucial role in determining the dates for Hajj and Eid al-Adha for Muslims in Indonesia. The decision made during the session is officially announced to the public through a Press Conference and official media channels.
“Let’s carry out Eid al-Adha prayers on Friday,June 6,2025,”
