Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Scientists find a giant ocean hidden far below the surface of the earth. This finding was published by a team of research from Northwestern University, United States, and is said to have the potential to change the understanding of the water cycle on this planet.
The water reserve is located about 700 kilometers below the surface, stored in a ringwoodite mineral that is able to withstand large amounts of water.
The volume of this hidden ocean is estimated to reach three times the entire ocean on the surface of the earth.
“This is a strong proof that the water on earth originates from the planet itself,” said Steven Jacobsen, a researcher from Northwestern University who led the research, quoted from the Economic Times, Friday (29/8/2025).
This discovery was made using a 2,000 seismograph network that analyzed waves from more than 500 earthquakes. These seismic waves slow down when passing through moist rocks, indicating the presence of giant water reserves in the Earth’s coat.
This finding challenges the old theory that calls water on earth comes from the comet’s impact. Conversely, the latest research indicates that the ocean on the surface actually slowly emerges from the interior of the planet all the time.
Researchers consider this discovery to be very important to understand the water cycle on earth, and open a new perspective on one of the most basic processes in our planet.
They are now collecting more seismic data from all over the world to find out the extent of the mantle’s melting and its role in maintaining the balance of water on earth.
