Dolphins Sign QB: Contract Details & Analysis

by archynetyscom

The Miami Dolphins entered the offseason with a major hole at the quarterback position, with Tua Tagovailoa expected to be cut by the team.

While there were concerns about how much the Dolphins would have to spend on a top quarterback this offseason, especially with the Tagovailoa dead cap hit, there is some good news for the Dolphins early in free agency.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoportthe Dolphins are in agreement on a three-year, $67.5 million contract with Malik Willis. The clear best fit in Miami this offseason is coming to the Dolphins on a very reasonable deal.

Dolphins to sign Malik Willis to $67.5M contract

“Sources: The Dolphins are signing Packers QB Malik Willis, as a new QB has landed in Miami,” Rapoport reports. “He gets a 3-year, $67.5M deal with $45M fully guaranteed in a contract negotiated by @DavidMulughete of @AthletesFirst.”

This is the signing the Dolphins have been linked to more often this offseason than any other team fit has been mentioned before.

The addition of Willis to the Dolphins quarterback room is a high-risk, high-reward roster move.

But, instead of the $30 million per-year deal some projected for Willis, he’s landing a much more reasonable deal. $22.5 million per-year deal.

Over the last few years with the Packers, where new head coach Jeff Hafley and new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan came from, Willis had put on a show as a backup QB.

He made three starts and a few relief appearances, where he went 2-1 with a 78.7% completion rate with 972 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.

He’s also a great rushing quarterback, running for 261 yards and three touchdowns the last two seasons in Green Bay on 42 attempts.

This addition for the Dolphins seemed like an obvious one, and now, according to Rapoport, this deal is set to happen. Willis is replacing Tagovailoa, as the Dolphins have found their new quarterback.
