From a weight loss perspective, the difference is clear. Those who want to drink soda but reduce the risk of weight gain make, according to the research, a better choice by choosing diet soda over sugar-sweetened counterparts, Aftonbladet Wellobe writes.

Soft drinks basically contain no calories and therefore do not contribute to an increased energy intake in the same way as sugary soft drinks. It is precisely this that makes light variants a more advantageous option for those trying to lose weight.

Does not increase sugar cravings

“In recent years, several well-controlled studies have shown that weight decreases if you replace sugar-sweetened drinks with diet drinks and do not change energy intake in general,” says Ingrid Larssonnutritionist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, to Wellobe.

Another common belief is that sweeteners in diet soda would increase hunger or sweet tooth. However, there is no support for this in the research.

“The research that is available in the area does not show any connection between hunger or cravings and diet soda,” he says Josephine Jonassonregistered dietitian at Wellobe. She adds that individual experiences can vary, but that general connections are lacking.
