Released in the Japanese archipelago in July, in North America in September and last Friday in China, the film attracted 89.17 million spectators outside Japan, Aniplex and Toho said on Monday.
Adapted from a manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, published between 2016 and 2020 in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, the film follows teenage “demon slayer” Tanjiro Kamado and his companions in their quest to save the world from these creatures.
In Japan, it remains in second position in terms of theatrical receipts behind the previous film “Demon Slayer”, a huge success during the Covid-19 pandemic, which dethroned “Spirited Away” (2001), from Studio Ghibli, from the top step of the podium.
The “Demon Slayer” franchise, available in both series and feature films, is often hailed for having redefined the artistic codes of the genre, with breathtaking special effects, without straying from the themes that work, at the forefront of which are friendship and empathy.
The first of the name, “The Infinity Train”, brought in 275 million dollars. A third feature film must close the story.
Animation rules the roost in Japan, where only two of the ten most profitable films at the domestic box office are not: “Titanic” and the first part of “Harry Potter”.
