From Evanston to Italy: An Unlikely Journey

Dan Peterson, the american coach and commentator, recently shared stories and insights from his illustrious career at an event hosted by Basket Lecco. The event, attended by numerous aspiring basketball players, highlighted Peterson’s critically important contributions to Italian basketball over the past half-century.

Peterson, born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1936, may not have been physically imposing, but he became a giant in the world of basketball. His journey to Italy began unexpectedly.As Peterson recounted, he was coaching the Chilean national team when an opportunity arose in Bologna. “I trained the lowest national team in the world: Chile,” Peterson explained. “It happened that in Bologna they had hired another American coach who however pulled back to the last … they absolutely wanted a US coach and I was the only one free on the square and so, in four days, I left Santiago and arrived in Italy.”

Initially intended as a short-term engagement, Peterson’s Italian adventure blossomed into a lifelong commitment. “I remained over fifty. Why so much? Well the reason is in the audience and it’s called Laura … it’s my wife,” he revealed, highlighting the personal connection that solidified his bond with Italy.

Peterson’s talk was filled with anecdotes that illustrated his coaching beliefs and the lessons he learned throughout his career. During a practice session with Olimpia Milano, Pittis made a risky pass that angered Bob McAdoo, the former NBA star. McAdoo, with Mike D’Antoni translating, threatened Pittis, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and avoiding careless mistakes.

Peterson emphasized that this incident taught Pittis a valuable lesson about playing with focus and discipline, ultimately contributing to his development as a champion. Peterson recalled an experience from his early coaching days when his middle school team won a game by a lopsided score of 80-7.His supervisor reprimanded him for humiliating the opposing team,teaching him a valuable lesson about sportsmanship. “Who do you think you are? – He told me – don’t you understand that today you humiliated the opposing children?”

This experience shaped Peterson’s approach to coaching, even at the professional level. He revealed that he always instructed his teams to avoid winning by more than nine points, a practice that sometimes frustrated his assistants.
