Daire Hickey Resigns as Director of RTE Amidst Scandals

In a significant move, Daire Hickey has announced his resignation from his position as a director of RTE, Ireland’s national broadcaster. The decision comes after a tumultuous period marked by financial irregularities and managerial changes.

The Resignation and Its Timeline

In a statement, RTE confirmed that Hickey had written to the new arts and media minister, Patrick O’Donovan, to formally notify him of his resignation. Hickey’s term was due to extend until July 2026, but he cited personal commitments and business projects as reasons for stepping down.

Hickey’s Journey with RTE

Hickey’s tenure at RTE has been a journey of significant change and controversy. He began his career at the station as a researcher on the popular show “Saturday Night With Miriam” in 2007. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become a director during a transformative period.

In his LinkedIn post, Hickey expressed gratitude for the honor of serving RTE and acknowledged the challenges faced during his time on the board. “Public service broadcasting has never been more important,” he wrote, highlighting RTE’s role in Irish society.

The Challenges Faced by RTE

The years under Hickey saw several scandals and controversies at RTE, most notably the resignation of Dee Forbes, the then director general. Forbes was asked to step down by the board’s chairwoman due to financial irregularities and misuse of resources.

RTE directors were also summoned before Oireachtas committees multiple times to explain the use of barter accounts and reckless decisions like the “Toy Show – The Musical,” which proved to be a commercial failure.
