Dominick Cruz, a name synonymous with bantamweight excellence in the UFC, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Merab Dvalishvili’s claim to the title of greatest of all time (GOAT) in the division.

Dvalishvili is set to face Sean O’Malley at UFC 316. The outcome of this fight could significantly bolster Dvalishvili’s already extraordinary resume and edge him closer to GOAT status.

Cruz, while widely regarded as one of the best, acknowledges Dvalishvili’s growing presence in the conversation.

Cruz on Dvalishvili’s GOAT Credentials

During a recent podcast appearance, Dominick Cruz addressed the comparisons between himself and Dvalishvili in the context of the bantamweight GOAT debate.

“The fact that there’s even a conversation with me involved, it’s not for me to decide something like that,” Cruz stated, drawing a parallel to basketball legends. “I’m not saying it’s this level, but as a parallel you’re talking about LeBron [James] and [Michael] Jordan, right?”

“You’re never going to convince me ever, ever – no matter what, under any circumstance -that LeBron is better than Jordan,”

cruz elaborated on why Dvalishvili deserves to be in the conversation, highlighting the challenges he has overcome.

“This dude has run through the ladder,” cruz explained. “This dude has had to fight up and down the ladder exactly the same way that I did. I had to fight my way through the hardest fights in the division, multiple rematches, before I got my shots. I had to earn every scrap, and I see that similarity in Merab’s fights. I tip my hat to him.”

Dvalishvili is currently riding a 12-fight win streak, including victories over formidable opponents like Umar Nurmagomedov and Henry Cejudo.

O’malley’s GOAT Case

Sean O’Malley is also receiving consideration in the GOAT conversation.Prior to his defeat against Dvalishvili, O’Malley held the bantamweight title, securing victories against Aljamain Sterling and Marlon Vera.

UFC 316 marks O’Malley’s first fight since his previous encounter with Dvalishvili.

The stakes are high for both fighters in this rematch, with the winner poised to solidify their legacy in the bantamweight division.
