Coffee & Longevity: Does It Really Reduce Risk of Death?

A large-scale study has again highlighted the habit of drinking coffee, which was previously considered simple, but apparently has a big influence on health. Here’s the explanation.

Reporting from Independent UK (21/11/2025), this study involving tens of thousands of adults in the United States found that not only the amount of coffee they drink, but also the time they enjoy it can determine the health benefits they obtain.

Researchers tracked participants’ coffee consumption patterns and found significant differences between those who drank coffee in the morning and those who consumed it throughout the day.

These findings open a new discussion about how the body’s biological rhythms and the timing of caffeine intake can influence the risk of death and cardiovascular disease. The following is a complete explanation.

1. The benefits of coffee are more optimal if you drink it in the morning

A recent study shows that the best time to enjoy coffee can influence its health benefits. This research involving more than 40,000 adults in the United States found two coffee drinking patterns.

Coffee consumption time is categorized into three periods, namely morning (04.00-11.59), afternoon (12.00-16.59), and evening (17.00-03.59).

First, the group who drank coffee before noon and second, the group who consumed coffee throughout the day. The results showed that coffee drinkers in the morning had a 16% lower risk of death than those who didn’t drink coffee.

In addition, those who habitually drink coffee in the morning also have a 31% lower risk of dying from heart disease. These findings show that consuming coffee in the morning apparently has a greater health impact than the habit of drinking coffee throughout the day.

2. Side Effects of Drinking Coffee All Day

In contrast to morning coffee drinkers, those who drank coffee throughout the day did not show a reduced risk of death or heart disease.

Although this research also highlights that consuming higher amounts of coffee is actually significantly associated with a lower risk of death, but only occurs in the group who drink it in the morning.

Researchers suspect that the habit of drinking coffee until the afternoon or evening can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm and reduce the production of hormones such as melatonin which plays a role in regulating sleep.

This sleep disorder can trigger changes in blood pressure and inflammation which have an impact on heart health.

3. Scientific Explanation Behind Coffee Time Findings

The study’s lead author, Dr. Lu Qi from Tulane University, explained that this study was the first to examine the relationship between coffee drinking time and health risks. He said that it is known that coffee does not increase the risk of heart disease and can actually reduce the risk of a number of chronic diseases.

However, so far the timing of coffee consumption has never been studied in depth. Dr. Qi added that consuming coffee in the afternoon or evening has the potential to disrupt biological rhythms and affect hormone levels, thus having a negative impact on cardiovascular risk factors.

He emphasized the need for further studies to test the impact of changing coffee drinking times on health.

4. Experts Recommend Drinking Coffee in the Morning for Better Effects

Professor Thomas Lüscher from Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London, England, emphasized that many coffee drinkers throughout the day experience sleep disorders. He believes that the current scientific evidence is strong enough to show that drinking coffee in the morning is better for your health.

According to him, coffee consumption remains safe, but you need to pay attention to drinking time. Similar findings were also seen in caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee drinkers. The researchers noted that morning coffee drinkers tended to consume less coffee than drinkers throughout the day.

However, this pattern actually provides greater health benefits. These findings open up the possibility that future recommendations for drinking coffee will need to consider the time of consumption, not just the amount of coffee or caffeine.
