Public outcry Over Nuclear Waste Shipments

Amidst blustery conditions, approximately thirty individuals, a mix of men and women, voiced their opposition to the transport of highly radioactive nuclear waste in front of Bremen Central Station. Demonstrators held aloft banners bearing slogans such as nuclear power? No thanks!, Stop Castor!, and 100% renewable!.This demonstration highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding nuclear waste management in germany.

On the occasion of this transport, we want to draw attention to the fact that the nuclear waste problem in Germany is far from solved.

Castor Containers En Route to Lower Bavaria

Currently, seven Castor containers, laden with nuclear waste, are being transported from Great Britain to Germany via a specialized vessel. According to announcements from the society for Nuclear Service (GNS) in essen and the British firm Sellafield Ltd., the containers are destined for Niederaichbach, situated in the Landshut district of Lower Bavaria. The waste will be temporarily stored at the Isar intermediate storage facility, formerly part of the Isar nuclear power plant.

Germany’s Commitment to Repatriate Nuclear Waste

Germany is contractually obligated to reacquire this waste, a byproduct of reprocessing spent fuel from German nuclear power plants at Sellafield in the UK. While GNS has withheld specific details regarding the transport route and schedule for security reasons, the “Castor stop” alliance anticipates the ship’s arrival in Nordenham, within the Wesermarsch district of Lower Saxony. From there, the Castor containers are expected to be transferred onto railway wagons for the final leg of their journey, potentially commencing on Tuesday.
