Brandenburg: New Ministers Sworn In – SPD & CDU

Agriculture Minister Hanka Mittelstädt, Science Minister Manja Schüle and Justice Minister Benjamin Grimm (all SPD) were not sworn in because they retained their previous ministerial positions in the new coalition.

This also applies to Prime Minister Woidke. He also did not have to be re-elected by the state parliament – Article 85 of the state constitution states that the prime minister’s term of office only ends when a new state parliament meets. The constitution does not stipulate that in the event of a changed coalition during the course of an electoral period, the head of government must be re-elected by the members of the state parliament.

After the swearing-in, the first cabinet meeting was scheduled. The SPD and CDU now have three and a half years until the next scheduled election.

Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) previously appointed the new red-black cabinet. “Together we will work hard to ensure that Brandenburg remains economically strong and socially fair,” announced Woidke. “I have great respect for this task,” said the new Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Redmann.
