The Munich filmmaker Joseph Vilsmaier became famous as a cameraman and director of modern homeland films such as “Herbstmilch”, “Rama dama” and “Schlafes Bruder” and also celebrated audience successes with historical films such as “Comedian Harmonists”. For the documentary “Bavaria – Dream Trip through Bavaria”, the director, who has close ties to his Bavarian homeland, went on a journey through Bavaria together with the helicopter pilot Hans Ostler, a specialist in aerial photography. In his luggage: a 500,000 euro Cineflex camera from the USA, mounted on the helicopter, with which Vilsmaier captures the beauty of the Free State in breathtaking aerial photos. The audience gets to know Bamberg, a world cultural heritage site, from its most beautiful side, as well as Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Würzburg. Atmospheric photos show Tegernsee, Königssee with St. Bartholomä, Eibsee, the Isar valley and the Danube. Vilsmaier compiled the most impressive footage from over 30 hours of film material to create a unique declaration of love for Bavaria. Of course, “Bavaria – Dream Trip through Bavaria” does not consist exclusively of aerial photographs: the country, people and customs are also portrayed in the documentary and the history of the region, its traditions and customs are told.
