Embarking on an extraordinary journey, a Baltimore City high school senior has published a book to educate young minds about influential Black Americans. Mercy High School senior Milan Brown is a shining example of dedication and passion, using her talents to create a teaching tool for Black History Month.
Motivation Behind ‘Stepping into History’
“It’s always been important to me not to be put in a box,” Milan Brown shared with WBAL-TV. “I know there are many facets to who I am, and I plan to pursue numerous paths in life.”
Brown is a multifaceted individual, excelling academically in the honors program while dominating the basketball court with remarkable achievements of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
“Stepping into History: A VR Experience”
Brown has penned a children’s book titled “Stepping into History: A VR Experience,” aimed at kids aged 8 to 12.
“The book includes textual descriptions and illustrations of significant moments in history involving influential Black Americans,” Brown explained. “Kids can step into a virtual reality adventure and learn about these crucial figures.”
During a field trip to a museum, young readers don VR goggles to embark on an educational and immersive journey through history. Brown hopes this innovative learning experience will inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of Black history among youth.
A Passionate Community Leader
Brown’s dedication to learning and personal growth extends beyond academics and athletics. She is an active volunteer in the community.
“I saw a lot of opportunities to help in Baltimore City and many people in need,” Brown asserted. “It’s always been important to me to give back to a place that has supported me.”
At a young age, Brown founded her own nonprofit organization called “Kids Powered Inc.,” underscoring her commitment to making a positive impact in her hometown.
Future Goals and Aspirations
As Brown prepares to matriculate at Wake Forest University, she sees her book as another avenue for giving back and encouraging others to do the same.
“Continuing to help others is near and dear to my heart,” Brown confirmed. “I want to ensure that I repay a city that has helped me so much.”
Brown’s next objective is to pen a secondary book, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to her mission.
