This revised estimate, described by NASA as equivalent to a 10-story building, is further refined by Andy Rivkin from the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, who equates it to a 15-story building. The discrepancy highlights the importance of multi-spectral observations in accurately determining asteroid size.

Beyond size, the James Webb Telescope has also provided insights into the asteroid’s thermal properties.Rivkin notes that 2024 YR4’s thermal behaviour is atypical compared to other asteroids. This may be due to its rapid spin and a surface primarily composed of rock-sized fragments or larger, rather than fine grains of sand.
