Apple Watch Series 4 Now Considered Vintage Product

by Archynetys Economy Desk

The new year has brought changes at Apple as the tech giant has updated its list of vintage and obsolete products. Among the additions is the iconic Apple Watch Series 4, joining one of the last Intel Macs launched by the company.

Apple Watch Series 4 Officially Declared Vintage

Starting January 2025, all variants of the Apple Watch Series 4 have been categorized as “vintage” worldwide. This designation includes the aluminum and stainless steel models in both 40mm and 44mm sizes.

Announced in September 2018, the Apple Watch Series 4 marked a significant redesign featuring larger displays, thinner bezels, and more rounded corners. Its introduction also saw the leak of official product images, ahead of Apple’s event, by 9to5Mac, along with images of the iPhone XS.

Apple defines a product as “vintage” when it has been out of distribution for more than five years. For products that have not been distributed for over seven years, “obsolete” is the designation. Vintage products are still eligible for repairs if parts are available, whereas obsolete products are not.

The Apple Watch Series 4’s software support was officially ended with the release of watchOS 11, which marked the end of significant updates for the device, with watchOS 10 being its last major update.

More Joining the Vintage Products List

Following the Apple Watch Series 4, in July 2024, three more products were added to Apple’s vintage list: the iPhone X, the original AirPods, and the first-generation HomePod. These additions reflect Apple’s ongoing strategy to phase out older models and emphasize newer technological advancements.

For users of these vintage devices, it’s important to note that while repairs are still possible with parts availability, upgrading to the latest models might be more beneficial to access the latest features and security updates.
