- FC Basel celebrated an important 3-1 home win against FCS Bucharest on matchday 4 of the Europa League.
- The guests from Romania have to play outnumbered for over 80 minutes after a red card against goalie Stefan Tarnovanu.
- Nati player Johan Manzambi scored a goal in Freiburg’s victory in Nice.
“We have to win the game,” Ludovic Magnin demanded before the game. The Basel team’s targeted home win came against FCS Bucharest in St. Jakob-Park. Magnin’s team won 3-1 and achieved their second victory in their fourth game in the Europa League. The Basel team benefited from two early, unfortunate handballs by the guests and – once again – from a great captain, Xherdan Shaqiri.

The game in the “Joggeli” was not yet old when the Romanians were extremely unfortunate twice within 4 minutes. Two handballs resulted in a red card against the goalkeeper and a penalty that led to the first goal:
- 12. Minute: Moritz Broschinski plays a one-two with Shaqiri and suddenly finds himself in front of the rushed goalie Stefan Tarnovanu. The 25-year-old clearly defends Broschinski’s attempt outside the penalty area with his arm and is therefore sent to the shower early.
- 16. Minute: Shaqiri takes the subsequent free kick, which FCSB defender Siyabonga Ngezana deflects with his arm. The Albanian referee Juxhin Xhaja watches the scene again on the screen and then decides on a penalty.
- 19. Minute: Of course, Shaqiri doesn’t miss this opportunity and casually converts it to 1-0.
The lead and the home crowd behind them, plus one more man on the pitch: everything was in place for a Basel victory after less than 20 minutes. But FCB failed to make it 2-0. In particular, Marin Soticek missed a possible preliminary decision twice rather miserably (45th + 1/54th).
Dream goal from the guests to make it 1:1
So it happened as it almost had to happen: FCSB, which by no means just retreated despite being outnumbered, equalized to make it 1-1 (57th). A free kick from their own half was enough to cause major problems for Basel. What Darius Olaru did next was world class. The Romanian captain held his own against Adrian Barisic and then scored with a brilliant shot over Marwin Hitz.
However, the home team was not impressed by this – the new lead came in the 73rd minute through Shaqiri, who this time only had to hit the empty box and even allowed himself to look away. The veteran initiated the scene himself and was spot on after Moussa Cissé shot off the post.
The guests remained dangerous afterwards, but they were unable to equalize again. Substitute Ibrahim Salah made it 3-1 in the 88th minute – of course on an assist from Shaqiri.
This is how it goes
