Over five decades, an esteemed piece of British engineering has been a faithful companion to a Roscommon family. Sean Leydon recently reunited with the man who sold him the Land Rover at a vintage car show in Strokestown, celebrating the vehicle’s remarkable journey and restoration.
Purchase from Jim Callery
Sean Leydon’s adventure with his Land Rover began in 1973 when he purchased it from Jim Callery in Strokestown. Callery, who was the founder of Westward Scania, quoted a three-month waiting period, explaining that he was not an agent for the brand. Undeterred, Sean agreed to the timeline.
The vehicle’s price was an impressive 1,725 pounds at the time. Notably, Callery waived the need for Sean to pay a deposit upfront, a gesture of goodwill that Sean greatly appreciated. The eagerly awaited call arrived, and Sean faced a significant challenge: withdrawing such a large sum of cash from the bank.
The Bank Transaction
Sean’s hefty withdrawal required him to meet with the bank manager. To avoid raising suspicions about his intended use of the funds, he told a fabricated story. “I said I was buying cattle, because the fellas selling cattle like cash,” Sean recounted to the Roscommon Herald. With his cash in hand, Sean and his wife, Rena, embarked on a cautious journey to pick up the Land Rover, referring to the experience as a “hot time.”
Upon receiving the Land Rover, Callery actually refunded Sean 25 pounds, which he wisely used to purchase diesel for the vehicle.
The Maiden Voyage
The Land Rover’s first journey took an unexpected turn when Sean encountered customs duties. The officials took a fuel sample, and Sean was issued a hefty fine of 500 pounds. However, with the help of his solicitor, Sean managed to negotiate and reduce the fine by 300 pounds. This lesson served him well, and he resolved to always fill his vehicle with the correct diesel thereafter.
The Land Rover became an integral part of Sean’s life, serving the family well for years after the initial purchase.
Restoration Efforts
In 2019, Sean’s sons, Aonghus and Sean Óg, decided it was time to give the beloved Land Rover an overhaul. They turned to Mick Slattery of Lecarrow, whom Sean interviewed extensively to ensure he was the right person for the job. After receiving the green light, Slattery began the restoration process in his workshop.
The restoration aimed to preserve the Land Rover’s originality. The vehicle still boasts many of its original parts, including the wheels and bumpers. Sean consciously opted against adding power steering, preferring to maintain the vehicle’s authenticity.
The Reunion
The recently restored Land Rover made a grand appearance at a vintage car show held in Strokestown Park House. The vehicle garnered attention from many enthusiasts, who were intrigued by its impeccable condition and rich history.
The visit coincidentally reunited Sean with Jim Callery, allowing them to reflect on the passage of time and the enduring bond of their shared history with the Land Rover.
The Land Rover also attracted recognition from several people at the show who remembered its distinctive number plate from frequent outings in Roscommon town.
A Legacy of Love
Aonghus Leydon, Sean’s son who was involved in the restoration, emphasized the importance of perpetuating the family’s memories. “Since the refurbishment, Sean’s grandchildren will have the same memories of Sean driving the Land Rover as Sean’s own children,” he noted.
The Land Rover not only represents a personal milestone for the family but also stands as a testament to the enduring appeal and reliability of British engineering.
