The commemorative album “Portrait + Carlito”, an original Japanese project, is set to be released on Wednesday, December 10th, and is a set of the first and last solo albums of Carlos Marin, the world-renowned baritone singer who passed away suddenly in a British hospital while on tour in December 2021. Carlos signed a solo contract with Universal Music in 2020, when he was active as a core member of Il Divo, and released his solo album “Portrait” in October of that year. It has been decided that he will come to Japan for promotions in conjunction with the release of this album, and will also hold his second solo performance in Japan in January 2021, his first in four years.
However, due to the global spread of the new coronavirus at the time, the planned promotional visit to Japan in October 2020 and the Japan performance in January 2021 were canceled. Shortly after starting Il Divo’s Christmas tour in the UK in December 2021, Carlos also contracted the coronavirus and suddenly passed away at a hospital in Manchester on December 19 of the same year. He passed away at the age of 53.
Il Divo’s album “For Once in My Life,” in which Carlos participated, was released in July 2021, but Carlos’ last recording before his death was actually his solo album “Portrait,” and after its release, in parallel with his group activities, he was also actively preparing for a solo tour.
Since Carlos’ sudden death, many fans from all over the world have visited his grave in Madrid, Spain, and memorial events have been held every year on his birthday on October 13th. It is said that Carlos’ family still receives letters from many Japanese fans. Carlos’s mother, Magdalena Menchero, and his sister, Rosie Marin, thought, “Can we release a special memorial album for the Japanese fans who still remember and love Carlos?” So, just before the four-year anniversary of Carlos’ death, they decided to release Portrait + Carlito, a set of the first and last albums Carlos recorded before his death. “Carlito”, which will be released for the first time in Japan, is Carlos’s first album, which was released in the Netherlands in 1981 and was recorded when he was 12 years old. The album title “Carlito” is a Spanish word that means the nickname for “Carlos.” The album is full of bright pop songs sung by 12-year-old Carlos, based on Neapolitan folk songs and European pops of the time, and this album also shows a glimpse of his talent, which is already known for his overwhelming singing ability.
“Portrait”, Carlos’s last recording before his death, is a collection of covers of songs that Carlos himself wanted to sing and recolored them in his own colors. Contains a total of 10 excellent covers of Aerosmith’s “Miss A Thing,” Rick Astley’s hit “Give You Up,” “Careless Whisper” released under the name Wham!
“Portrait + Carlito” to be released this time also includes messages from Carlos’ mother Magdalena Menchero and sister Rosie Marin to Japanese fans in the Japanese commentary booklet. A tri-fold mini photo book (6-sided bellows type) containing precious private photos of Carlos provided by his family will also be included in the product.

Carlos Marin was born on October 13, 1968 in Rüsselsheim, Hesse, Germany, to Spanish parents. He is now known worldwide as a member of the pop opera music group Il Divo.

Educated in Madrid (Spain), his musical career began when he was still a young child. At the age of eight, he recorded his first release, “Elpequeño Caruso,” produced by Father Abraham. In it, he sang classics such as “O Sole Mio” and “Granada.”

When Carlos was 10 years old, he recorded his second release, the single “Mijn Lieve Mama”. It was around this time that he began studying piano and music theory.
At the age of 12, Carlos released his first solo album, Carlito, in the Netherlands. He also moved to Spain and won several contest TV shows, including TVE’s “Gente Joven” and “Nueva Gente.” In addition, she appeared on the popular morning show “Por la Mañana” (*meaning “In the Morning”) hosted by Jesús Hermida, María Teresa Campos, and Nieves Herrero, and began to sing live to the accompaniment of an orchestra.

He was highly acclaimed as a singer and participated in singing competitions such as “Jacinto Guerrero”, “Francisco Alonso”, and “Julián Gayarre”. He has won across the board.

As many famous musicals began to be performed in Spain, he was offered important roles one after another. Carlos played the role of Marius in 1993’s Les Misérables. He played the leading role of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, in a double cast with José Sacristán, Don Silvestre in El Diluvio que viene, Captain Hook in Peter Pan, Vince Fontaine in Grease, and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast.

He also collaborated in the production of “The Magic of Broadway” and “Peter Pan” (stage and CD). In the latter, he shared producer and music director duties with Alberto Quintero.

On the silver screen, she sang in Tim Burton’s animated film “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” He also provided the dubbing of the prince’s voice in the Spanish version of the Disney film Cinderella.

He then appeared on stage as a primo baritone in various operas such as “La Traviata,” “The Barber of Seville,” “La Bohème,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” and “Madama Butterfly,” which earned him worldwide acclaim.

He also appeared in various zarzuelas (a type of opera, a small traditional Spanish opera that deals with comedic themes). Examples include “La Gran Via” (as Caballero de Gracia), “The Alarming Wolf” (as Felipe), and “Paloma’s Eve” (as Julián).

Carlos Marín became a member of Il Divo in December 2003. Their first album, “Il Divo” (original title: Il Divo), reached number one on the US Billboard chart. It reached the top of the UK charts, taking over the top spot from Robbie Williams. This first album alone has sold 12 million copies worldwide.

After that, Il Divo became the center of attention all over the world. They went on to release “Ancora”, “Always – Siempre”, “The Promise”, “Christmas Collection”, “Wicked Game”, “The Greatest Hits”, and “A Musical”. Affair) and “Timeless” (original title: Timeless). To date, they have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and topped the charts in various countries 50 times. In addition, the total number of live audiences has reached over 40 million people.

Il Divo’s Carlos Marin has fascinated us by collaborating with many of the biggest names in music history. In addition to his unforgettable Madison Square Garden performance with Barbra Streisand, his list of collaborators includes Celine Dion, Julio Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Kylie Minogue, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, and Pavarotti.

He was also invited as a guest of honor by various Hollywood actors and political leaders from various countries to perform songs. During this time, in addition to his work with Il Divo, he also began working as a producer, producing Innocence, a female singer who was already well-known in Mexico. We are supporting her world debut.

Then, in 2011, Carlos Marin surprised us again. In parallel with the Il Divo tour, Carlos gave his first solo performance entitled “Carlos Marin of Il Divo in Concert” (Spanish: Carlos Marin – En Concierto). Starting in Spain, he traveled to several countries, including Portugal, Romania, Russia, Mexico, and Latin America. Many of the songs performed on this tour are also included in their first live album of the same name, “En Concierto” (CD/DVD).

A one-of-a-kind show that shakes viewers and listeners, makes them dream, and allows them to enjoy one of the most popular “voices that transcend borders.” An explosion of power, rhythm, and Las Vegas style in its purest form. A big band of 20 musicians and 12 dancers perform a wide variety of songs, from Broadway musical numbers, movie soundtracks, and Spanish dance numbers to songs by some of the most famous singers of all time, including Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, and Elvis Presley.

Carlos Marín, a Spanish member of Il Divo, demonstrated his charisma and singing ability to the utmost, accompanied by acrobatic choreography and a chorus. It will entertain the audience for two hours straight.

Carlos has been juggling his touring activities with Il Divo and his own solo career. In 2019, he recorded a new album, his first studio recording since his debut with Il Divo. This album, which was originally scheduled to be released in April 2020, has been postponed until October 14, 2020 (Wednesday) due to the spread of the new coronavirus that is raging around the world. This new album includes great hits by Aerosmith, Tina Turner, Rick Astley, and Wham! Featuring George Michael, as well as classic songs by Frankie Valli, Nat King Cole, Joe Cocker, and Queen, as well as Justin Timberlake’s theme song for the movie “Trolls,” which reached No. 1 in the U.S., all with a unique twist on widely known pop and rock classics.

In conjunction with the release of this album, Carlos is actively preparing to embark on a tour as a solo artist, and at the same time, he has also begun preparations for Il Divo’s new album and a world tour to coincide with its release. However, shortly after starting Il Divo’s Christmas tour in the UK in December 2021, Carlos also contracted the coronavirus and suddenly passed away at a hospital in Manchester on December 19 of the same year. He passed away at the age of 53.
