The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a significant announcement regarding a memorial for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, marking a contentious issue in current political dynamics.
BJP’s Decision to Build a Memorial
On December 28, 2024, the BJP stated that a decision to build a memorial for Manmohan Singh had been made and communicated to the Congress leadership the day before. According to BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi, the party is committed to honoring Manmohan Singh for his substantial contributions to economic development in the country.
“BJP and the NDA government led by Prime Minister Modi is fully committed to giving due respect to him (Manmohan Singh) who laid a major foundation for the country’s economic development,” stated Trivedi.
Trivedi revealed that the cabinet approved the construction of the memorial and mausoleum during its recent meeting. Home Minister Amit Shah informed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge of this decision. The actual timeline for the memorial’s construction will depend on processes such as land acquisition and trust formation.
Congress’s Stance and Political Discourse
The Congress, however, maintains that they wanted Manmohan Singh’s cremation to take place at a location where a memorial could be subsequently built. Despite this request, his cremation was performed at the Nigambodh Ghat, a public crematorium in Delhi.
Trivedi criticized the Congress for continuing to engage in politics even during the sensitive period of Manmohan Singh’s passing. “Congress party, who never respected Dr. Manmohan Singh in their lifetime, today even after his death, they are seen doing politics,” he commented, emphasizing that such political maneuvering was inappropriate during times of grief.
Trivedi also highlighted Manmohan Singh’s unique historical significance, noting that he was the first prime minister outside the Nehru-Gandhi lineage to serve for a decade. “At least today, in this hour of grief, politics should be avoided,” he concluded.
The Issue of Individual Memorials
Notably, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, under Manmohan Singh’s leadership, had proposed a single memorial ground at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at Rajghat for all future prime ministers and leaders, rather than individual memorials. This suggests a shift in national policy compared to the current Call for an individual memorial by the BJP.
Conclusion: A Call for Unity
As the nation mourns the loss of a statesman who significantly shaped the economic landscape of India, the political debate around his memorial and cremation site underscores the ongoing tension between the BJP and Congress.
Trivedi’s statement reflects the BJP’s stance on respecting former leaders and transcending party politics, a sentiment that could resonate with many. Despite the geopolitical backdrop, the underlying message appears to be one of respect and honoring the legacy of Manmohan Singh.
