EVA Air airline allowed sick leave for flight attendants after the death of one of its crew members on Friday (10/10/2025) local time. With this rule, flight attendants who are sick can finally get temporary permission to rest and recover.

Quoted from Focus Taiwan, Saturday (25/10/2025) in a statement on Friday, this new rule requires the head and deputy head of the section who supervises flight attendants on board the plane to report the condition of the crew on duty. Flight attendants who are sick must immediately take leave to receive medical treatment.

Sick cabin crew will be sent back to Taiwan as passengers while their duties are replaced by other cabin crew. In return, the cabin crew on the flight will receive a bonus for doing additional work to replace the flight attendant who is sick.

EVA Air will also revise its performance appraisal system by the end of 2025 to provide sick leave. However, the airline did not mention the detailed steps that would be implemented in the improvement plan.

Previously, a 34-year-old EVA Air flight attendant surnamed Sun died allegedly due to work exhaustion. He was on duty on the Taipei-Mulan return flight and was not feeling well, but was unable to rest or receive medical treatment.

What are the Results of the Investigation into the Death of an EVA Air Flight Attendant?

The results of EVA Air’s investigation stated that the supervision of flight attendants while on duty failed to use medical resources. The department also did not report Sun’s condition to the pilot and company due to lack of knowledge.

Under these conditions, EVA Air plans to provide flight attendants with better access to information regarding manager contacts and ambulance costs abroad. This information will be announced on an open platform so that it can be accessed by each crew.

Responding to EVA Air’s plans, the union believes that this statement only wants to calm the emotions and criticism of employees. The airline has not explained concrete steps so promises of providing sick leave and improving performance appraisals are still very vague. The union is urging EVA Air to ensure that this promise is realized so that flight attendants are no longer suffocated by the work system.
