A Tale of Two Christmases: Snow in the Northeast, Sunshine in the Southwest

This weekend brings a delightful dichotomy to the US weather scene, painting a picture of snowy landscapes in the Northeast and sunny skies in the West. While some are getting their winter wonderland fix, others are bracing for unseasonably warm weather.

A White Welcome to Winter

The first day of winter got off to a snowy start for many in the Northeast, with snowfall ranging from a light dusting to a substantial 6 inches in Milton, Massachusetts. This wintry surprise, however, won’t stick around for long. The snowfall subsided thanks to a strong cold front, leaving behind daytime highs that remain 10-20 degrees below average.

Despite the early snow, a white Christmas won’t be a common sight this year. While a wintry Christmas Eve is still possible in some areas, the overall trend points towards milder temperatures over the holiday season.

Sunshine and Record Temperatures in the West

On the other side of the country, a stark contrast unfolds. The West Coast and adjacent regions will experience a warm and sunny spell with temperatures soaring 10-25 degrees above average. This high heat might even set new records in cities like Phoenix, Tucson, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas.

This warm air will then move eastward, eventually blanketing the Plains and the Mississippi Valley by Sunday, pushing temperatures 30 degrees higher than average in some areas.

A Warm Christmas for Most

While a white Christmas looks unlikely for most of the country, the warm weather is expected to persist throughout the holiday season. Overall, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are predicted to bring above-average temperatures across the US, with some areas in the Central and Southern regions seeing temperatures as much as 20 degrees warmer than usual.
