Over the last five years, the payment habits of the Latvian population have experienced significant transformation. The proportion of both non -cash and online billing has grown rapidly, which clearly demonstrates the active integration of society into the digital environment. Financial expert Ulvis Pāvuls emphasizes that data from the European Central Bank (ECB) show that online payments in Latvia have tripled during this period, which is a vivid evidence of the popularity of e-commerce. These dynamics undoubtedly indicate a triumph of digital payments, replacing the cash with more convenient smart devices.
Triumph of digital payment: from cash to smart devices
While the European Union as a whole is still the most commonly used payment type, Latvia has taken a bold step forward in the direction of digital transformation. Currently, 78% of the payment in Latvia is already impressive in the form of cashless money. However, the most impressive change is on the online settlement. If only 7% of the population made daily payments online in 2019, this figure has reached up to 25% by 2024. This means that every fourth payment is made digitally nowadays! This dynamics is not specific to Latvia only; Similar trends occur in other Baltic countries. In Lithuania, the share of online payments has increased by 17%and in Estonia by 8%. Interestingly, in European countries, this increase is most manifested directly in the purchase of food and everyday goods, as well as in the growing number of food supply orders, which now account for 11% of all payments. What a category that used to be less important has now become an essential part of our daily consumption.
Factors contributing to a digital revolution
These rapid changes have not happened by accident. They are facilitated by a number of important factors that together form a powerful drive for digital transformation. First, the continuous development of e-commerce and the increasing range of available goods and services have created new opportunities for consumers online. Secondly, entrepreneurs will have an essential drive for entrepreneurs to offer customers more comfortable, faster and more modern settlement solutions. Not only does it improve customer experience, it also increases sales. Third, the increase in digital skills in society has ensured that more and more people feel confident when making online payments. The use of websites and mobile applications becomes a daily habit of buying food, utility bills, and reserving services or use of transport.
We spend more online – and smarter
Not only the number of transactions, but also the total online payment value has increased. Compared to 2019, Latvian residents spend 23% more online. This confirms that citizens are ready not only to use digital payment solutions, but also to make bigger purchases online. These changes are also felt in the payment technology environment – the use of Apple Pay has grown particularly rapidly, which has doubled in less than a year. Google Pay also gradually strengthens its position, albeit at a slower pace. Despite these new players, Internet bank payments still retain popularity, although their share has slightly decreased. Interestingly, the average online payment amount has not changed significantly over the last five years and still fluctuates around 50 euros. This shows that citizens make both more frequent and higher purchases online, but the average transaction amount remains stable.
The fastest growth in specific sectors
The fastest increase in turnover since 2022 has been observed in cosmetics trade and in the segment of building materials and home goods. This confirms that people online buy a wide range of goods without limiting their daily needs. This indicates consumer confidence in e-commerce and willingness to make greater investment online as well.
Companies should be able to adapt to the digital landscape
These rapid changes in the shopping and paying habits of the Latvian population are forcing companies to rethink their strategies. According to financial experts, it is absolutely important for traders to provide customers with comfortable and varied payment options, especially online. Not only does this improve customer satisfaction and promote loyalty, it also directly contributes to the increase in sales. Demand for modern solutions is growing, and companies that adapt in a timely manner gain competitiveness. These data clearly mark the long -term trend – digital payments are becoming a dominant settlement form in the Baltic States and the demand for them continues to grow. Companies that want to be competitive must be able to offer not only quality goods and services, but also provide a perfect and convenient digital shopping experience. This includes the integration of modern payment methods as well as a user -friendly website and mobile application design. The future belongs to those who are able to introduce innovation and adapt to the changing environment, providing customers with an unforgettable shopping experience.
