World champion Magdalena Lobnig won the gold medal at the European Coastal Rowing Championships.

The Carinthian woman confidently beat the British Laura McKenzie in the grand finale of the Olympic beach sprint competition on Sunday.

In the quarter-finals, Lobnig, who won bronze in flat-water rowing at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, defeated the Hungarian Vivien Preil without much difficulty, and in the semi-finals she won just as confidently against the Spanish Teresa Moreno and thus saved energy for the fight for victory.

“The expectations were extremely high, as a world champion you are always the hunted. But I was able to rely on my strength, that I can improve from race to race and be there when it counts. I had a lot of fun rowing here, the racing conditions were really great, so I was able to use my physique and my experience. That was a really good test of form for the Beach Sprint World Championships in three weeks,” said Lobnig.
