Sudan, Syria Lead International Rescue Committee’s Watchlist

Sudan and Syria spearhead the International Rescue Committee’s 2025 Global Emergency Watchlist, highlighting the gravity of humanitarian crises worldwide.

For the consecutive year, Sudan tops this critical ranking due to relentless civil war since April 2023 between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Experts estimate this devastating conflict claiming at least 61,000 lives, displacing 11 million internally, sparking the world’s direst hunger crisis. Unicef warns 25 million Sudanese – half their population – depend on essential aid.

"With millions forcibly displaced and a growing humanitarian needs, turning away from the crisis unfolds in Sudan now is unbearable. Don’t avoid looking away; action for Sudan is desperately needed " urged the organization. Their plea comes via Instagram along with statistics of over 305 million vulnerable individuals globally demanding humanitarian help.

Alongside Sudan and Syria, numerous countries warrant immediate attention, including Israel/Gaza, Myanmar, South Sudan and Lebanon. Additionally, conflict-ridden zones in Lebanon, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Mali, Somalia, Afghanistan, Cameroon, CAR, Chad, DRC, Ethiopia, Niger, Nigeria, Ukraine and Yemen heighten global humanitarian concern.

“Our research indicates 82% of globally-documented humanitarian needs exist within states on our list. A significant concern in our report is the wider gap than ever between unmet needs and resources. Available funds should comfortably meet increasing demands,” lamented David Wight Miliband, CEO and former British MP. Sudan’s current crisis becomes the most serious documented amidst 15 years of conflict records by the international agency. Representing 10% of the human toll globally.

Miliband underscores that despite overflowing humanitarian capacity globally, 305 million worldwide are critically underservied. He asserts that achieving a more balanced and comprehensive humanitarian response relies on political commitment and accelerated resource allocations.
