Gen Z Protests & Riots: Global Unrest Explained

by Archynetys World Desk

From the streets of Kathmandu to Rabat, a new generation of protesters mobilizes digitally before taking the fight to the streets. What started as local protests against corruption and poor public services has now evolved into a global movement that has already fielded one government.

Over the past month, so-called “gen Z-Protests” have spread to land in Africa, Asia and South America.

The demonstrations have resulted in hundreds of arrests and injuries, and dozens of deaths. One government is already fielded, and another has dissolved itself.

Digital natives take to the streets

In Morocco, thousands of young people have protested since last week, mobilized through the message platform Discord of a movement that calls itself “Gen Z 212”-a reference to the country’s phone number code.

The protests are triggered by anger that Morocco spends billions on preparations for the World Cup in 2030 instead of public services such as health and education.

– Stadiums are here, but where are the hospitals? was one of the slogans that was called by the protesters.

Three people have been killed in the protests, and more than 400 people have been arrested, says Rachid El Khalfi, spokesman for the Moroccan Interior Ministry to Time.

Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announced on Thursday that he was ready for “dialogue and discussion”, but the protesters demand that he step down.

In Madagascar, President Andry Rajoelina dissolved his government on Monday after youth-led protests against lack of water and electricity access has resulted in at least 22 deaths and over 100 injured.

“We acknowledge and apologize if members of the government have not performed the tasks assigned to them,” Rajoelina said in a state broadcast, according to Time.

Nepal effect

The protest movement received international attention when youth-led demonstrations against corruption and a ban on social media platforms overturned Nepal’s government in early September.

At least 72 people were killed and hundreds wounded, most in the capital Kathmandu.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his position after the parliament building in Kathmandu was set on fire under the protests.

– Considering the unfortunate situation in the country, I have withdrawn with effect from today to facilitate the solution to the problem, Oli wrote in a letter to the president.

A 26-year-old woman from Madagascar says France 24 that the protests in Nepal were crucial to the creation of the Gen Z Madagascar movement.

“What happened in Nepal gave the people in Madagascar hoping that it was possible to overthrow the system, that young people could take control of their own fate,” she says.

Common digital tools

Gen Z-born between 1996 and 2010-is the first generation that has grown up in the Internet age. Now they use these digital tools to gather behind their cases, explains Michelle Chen, assistant professor of communication at Brock University, to CBC.

– Social media has a way of uniting and connecting different voices and experiences, which is important for movement building, says Chen.

In Morocco, the anonymous Discord server “Genz 212” grew from 3000 members to more than 130,000 in just a few days, according to CNN.

A common symbol of the protests is a pirate flag from the Japanese Manga series “One Piece”, in which piracy captain Monkey D. Luffy seeks to free the oppressed and fights against autocratic governments.

The flag was hung on the gates of the Singha Durbar Palace in Nepal, which went up in flames during the protests.

Increasing inequality drives the mind

Common to all protests is frustration over poor governance, lack of opportunities and increasing inequality, Chen explains to CBC.

– In many parts of the world, the Gen zes as a group. They become adults and graduate to a world of political instability, increased polarization, increasing welcome inequality and a weaker labor market. The future may look gloomy and hopeless, she says.

In Morocco, more than a third of young people under the age of 25 are unemployed, according to the country’s statistics agency.

Similar protests have also taken place in the Philippines, Indonesia, Serbia, Kenya, Paraguay and Peru in recent months.

Shana MacDonald, who researches social and digital media at the University of Waterloo, thinks this is just the beginning.

– I actually think this can be a new emergence of protest culture, and I think it will be global, she tells CBC.
