Lakers coach JJ Redick confirmed James’ absence while addressing the media after a Wednesday practice. He clarified that James is not currently with the team and the 22-year veteran’s return is uncertain. The upcoming Minnesota Timberwolves road game on Friday, December 15th, has yet to be confirmed as a potential return date.
James missed the team’s recent win against the Portland Trail Blazers due to soreness in his left foot. This marked the first game he’s missed all season. With the Lakers enjoying a lightened schedule, Redick granted the team Monday off and designated Tuesday as an optional "get what you need" day. James was not present for these team activities.
Handling James’ Load
As James approaches his 40th birthday later this month, his workload management has become increasingly important. Redick has recognized James’ physical needs, stating that his veteran point guard has even requested substitutions during games due to fatigue. The coach sees this current break as an opportunity for James to rest and recover.
Reaves’ Return
In positive news for the Lakers, starting shooting guard Austin Reaves, who has been sidelined for the past five games with a left pelvic injury, was able to rejoin the team for practice. Redick described Reaves as "a full participant of all the live stuff" but cautioned that he remains day-to-day ahead of the Minnesota game.
