Are NFL Viewership Numbers Cause for Concern?
The NFL remains a television juggernaut, but latest viewership figures for the Bengals-Cowboys game raise questions about the league’s future. Despite strong fan loyalty, the traditional broadcast model may be losing its grip.
A Stable Audience, But…
The Bengals-Cowboys game garnered an impressive average audience of 18.7 million viewers across ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2. This figure, while substantial, is surprisingly close to the viewership of the Packers-Lions game, which was exclusively streamed on Prime Video and averaged 18.48 million viewers.
This trend highlights a growing interest in streaming options for watching NFL games.
The ABC Advantage
The NFL appears to recognize this shift. In response to "sluggish" viewership numbers for non-ABC broadcasts, the league is expanding the number of ABC simulcasts in 2024. This move suggests a belief that the continued ABC exposure can bolster viewership figures.
A Look at Smaller Platforms
The ManningCast, available concurrently with the main broadcast, drew a slightly lower audience of 900,000 viewers. This marks a significant drop from previous years when viewership above one million was consistently reported.
Interestingly, viewership details for the Simpsons-themed game presented on ESPN+ and Disney+ were not released. This could indicate that the platform wasn’t a major draw for viewers.
Is the Future of NFL Streaming?
The trends observed in recent NFL viewership data present both challenges and opportunities for the league. While traditional television remains a powerful force, the rise of streaming platforms clearly signifies a changing landscape.
