Since Donald Trump took over as US president in January this year, he has introduced a number of new and sharply increased customs, which has had a major impact on world trade.

But Trump’s tariffs have also triggered “an explosion of freight theft” across the United States when organized leagues focus on truck drivers, according to Telegraph.

Above all, pharmaceutical companies, clothing manufacturers and electronics companies are struggling with a “never before” number of crimes that have increased by a third of one year, according to David Warrick, vice president of the company Overhaul, which is focused on supply chain security.

– I’ve been working with delivery chains for 30 years and I’ve never seen anything like it, says Warrick.

“It’s pure wild west”

The increase is a “side effect” of Trump’s tariffs on US import goods, according to Warrick.

– This is not opportunistic theft, this is organized crime. It is cartels and leagues that have infiltrated the delivery chains, says Warrick.

Ordinary tactics are false pickups where a criminal pretends to be the driver who will pick up a trailer or that gang members pretend to be custodians.

– They scrape off the serial numbers on trucks and trailers, they change registration plates. We have even seen that they repaint containers and remove doors with angle grinder. It’s pure wild west, says Warrick.

“They just get nicer”

The total losses as a result of this type of theft between April and June this year amounted to SEK 1.4 billion, according to Verisk Cargonet, which is the freight recovery network.

One of the reasons for the crime wave is the declining resources of the police, according to the network’s operational manager Keith Lewis.

– There are fewer police cars in the streets and investigators have high workload. The criminals realize it. They no longer see police cars on the highway so they just get nicer, says Lewis.
