Pro-Palestinian demonstrators recently disrupted a few stages in the Vuelta. They protested against the presence of Israel – Prime Minister Tech in the Spanish stage race.

“We are sensitive and attentive to the situation on the international stage, which has changed considerably since our arrival at the World Tour in 2017,” quotes Radio Canada website from the statement. “However, the current situation with regard to the team name can no longer be kept to achieve our goal, which is precisely the reason for our involvement in cycling.”

Bicycle supplier Factor also wants the name change from Ploeg

“We expect the team to take on a new name, in which the term Israel does not appear, and that it will take on a new identity and brand image,” said Prime Minister Tech. Bicycle supplier Factor of Israel – Premier Tech also wants a name change.

Israel – Premier Tech is in private hands and not a state team. The Israeli-Canadian billionaire Sylvan Adams is the owner of the team, who drives under an Israeli license. In the past, Adams has described themselves as an ambassador for Israel.

During the recent Vuelta, riders were hindered by the pro-Palestinian protests and several stages were shortened. The final ride was also terminated early, because campaigners had blocked their way.
