Newport Beach Wave Pool to be World’s Largest
While a proposed Newport Beach, CA wave pool has yet to get the official greenlight, the plans for the manmade surf park are starting to trickle out.The latest being the actual size of the pool, which, if approved, will be powered by Wavegarden Cove technology, and apparently, it’ll be the world’s biggest.
The Snug Harbor Surf Park project aims to bring a world-class surfing experience to newport Beach through a man-made wave pool. The pool will utilize Wavegarden Cove technology to generate consistent and customizable waves. The project is currently under review by the Newport beach City Council, with a public hearing scheduled for October 28, 2025, to consider the project’s approval, environmental impact report certification, and address concerns raised by the Airport Land Use Commission, according to the city’s official project page[[1]. The development has faced some opposition, particularly from the local golfing community, due to the proposed removal of parts of the Newport Beach Golf Course to accommodate the surf park[[2].
Speaking on the Couch Surfing Show, Snug Harbor Surf Park founder, Adam Cleary, expounded on the scale of the operation. see below.
“It’s going to be the biggest one [Wavegarden Cove] in the world,” Cleary said. “I was on a call with the Wavegarden guys. [The standard] is a 62-module. The more modules you have, the longer the wave. And the biggest is 62. They’re like, ‘how many do you want?’ I’m like, ’66.’ And they go, ‘why do you want 66? Why not 62?'”
Fair question. But Cleary responded:
“As we’re american, and we want the biggest and best. They started laughing. We wanna say we are the ‘largest Wavegarden in the world.'”

In case you missed it,there’s been some controversy surrounding Snug Harbor Surf Park – particularly with regards to the local golf community and the Newport Beach Golf Course. According to plans the project “would remove all existing improvements on the Project site including the driving range, pro shop, restaurant and bar, and three holes of golf, and redevelop the site with a 5.06-acre surf lagoon that would provide four distinct surf areas for both experienced and beginner surfers.”
And the golfers aren’t too happy about that.
What’s next with the proposed pool? Per the local government: “The Project will return to City Council for a public hearing on October 28, 2025, for full consideration (i.e. approving the Project, certifying the EIR, and overruling the Airport Land Use Commission)”
Stay tuned.
