by Archynetys News Desk

Since Monday, September 8, a video of a fight on the bus zone of the Sint-Pietersstation in Ghent has been circulating online. It shows how a young man gets a sturdy staircase against the chest, surrounded by bystanders. The perpetrator does not come into the picture.

“The police are aware of the incident,” said Mayor Mathias De Clercq (for Ghent) last Monday during a session of the city council, after a question from municipal councilor Johan Deckmyn (Vlaams Belang) about the fight.

“An official report was initially drawn up and currently an investigation is conducted led by the youth parquet,” said De Clercq. “Depending on the secret of the investigation, the police cannot share additional information.”

Preventive measures

The mayor did mean that every four months there is a consultation with various partners to prevent nuisance in and around the stations of Ghent. Among other things, the police, the railway police and the Outreaching work department are involved. During the consultation they share needs, coordinate responsibilities, make concrete agreements and set up preventive actions.

For example, daily community guards are present. A patrol is sent out every two weeks to remove lying spraying. Lockers were also placed for homeless people. “There is indeed strong focus on the liveability of our station environments,” the mayor concluded.
