Summer Rain & Stick Bread: Summer Farewell Part 3

by Archynetys Health Desk

Summer rain

Late summer heat. Cracks in the earth, dried flowers, harvested fields. The corn is still standing, soon it will be so far for him. Dark clouds. Thunder. Flash. Then the rain. It pours the dusty soil and the smell of summer rain rises. It smells of damp earth and flowers and even has a scientific name: “Petrichor”. It comes from ancient Greek, a connection of the words “Pétros”, which means “stone”, and “ichōr”, “blood of the gods”. Petrichor arises when plants separate oils during the dryness that are absorbed by the ground and whirled up by the rain.

Researchers assumed that the smell of some animals triggers the desire for mating. Although this could not be proven in the end, film scenes are passionate about fingers in the summer rain in the summer rain. For example, in Woody Allen “Match Point”: The sex in the summer rain also has something scary here and already gives an idea of the evil outcome of an affair. In Hollywood romances, it mostly remains backdrop. At Hemingway, the summer rain sometimes stands for death and the end of a love. Whether kitsch, longing or farewell: Petrichor is the fragrance of the melodrama.

Now, after the rain, it cools down pleasantly. Petrichor is still in the air. Maybe for the last time for this year.

Late summer Main lights

He is still there, we still want to celebrate the summer and its festivals

It is 10 p.m. and still warm in Frankfurt am Main. But pleasant – not oppressive. The lights of the skyline are reflected in the river. From the boxes “on days like this” booms from the dead trousers. On the river bank, a group of young people sits on camping chairs in a circle, open beer cans in the canned owners of their armrests. Someone in the group must have told a good joke – everyone laughs.

Next to it a few in the mid -30s on a picnic blanket – maybe a first date? Ten meters further, a group of women dances to Latin American beats in early 50s in front of the “Spanish stage”.

Reading recommendation

At the Museum’s Festival at the end of August, Frankfurt am Main is in a state of emergency for three days. You stroll from stage to stage, listen to concerts and rock with. When the heat builds up, you quickly escape to the World Heritage Museum on the Schaumainkai to cool off-and then even faster to where the next band is playing.

The stones on the bank of the bank are still warm from the last summer days. You could almost become melancholic. But when you cross the Main on the iron bridge, suspended with tons of “love locks”, the music mixes with the quiet murmur of the people around you, the water sparkles, and you can see the whole scenery. A beautiful night bustle.

Behind me a youthful voice that – apparently in the direction of a group of friends – says: “Ey, let’s put us on the shore again.” Let the legs dangle over the water on the edge of the river, enjoy the view of the skyline. Somehow it feels like the entire city came together that evening to say goodbye to summer. And to remind you how easy life can feel.

The only thing that matters is for a few hours: to be here, toast to this feeling of lightness. Unfortunately, winter depression and barren trees on the Main will soon be called again, but today it is not that far! Take a deep breath today, absorb everything, listen to voices that get lost on the way and watch children playing. And make a note of the appointment for the Mainuferfest next summer: 28th to August 30, 2026.

At midnight, rockets shoot into the air. The explosion with its lights in the sky heralds the end of the festival. It is loud, bright and unfortunately quickly over. Moments like this stay – even if it gets cold again and it says: “Do you still know, in summer …?”

Recipe: stick bread

Crackling fire, stick bread in a flame license – so late summer tastes

You know what …? – I always have this thought when I sit outside on a nice summer evening and pass a fire bowl from somewhere. Every time it puts me into the teenage period, then I am 14 again and sit with my scout friends around the campfire, one plays “Take Me Home, Country Roads” on the guitar that sing others -and there is chai and stick bread.

I didn’t do it myself for ages, get time again!

It takes at least 100 centimeters long sticks: fresh beech, hazelnut or pasture are good, golden rain, elder or yew, because poisonous. Feel free to put in water beforehand, then you don’t catch fire so easily.

Recipe for the dough:

400 g flour, 1 packet of dry yeast, 0.5 tsp salt, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 300 ml of warm milk

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and knead into a smooth dough. Let them rest for about 15 minutes.

Paint the dough into approx. Twelve pieces, pull strands from it. Every strand evenly in spirals around the staggering. Keep over the embers for about 10 minutes (not over the fire, the bread should not be black), always turn. If it is well tanned from all sides and sounds hollow when tapping it, it is even.
